Text

Our main text will be Rosenlicht, M., Introduction to analysis (1968), : Scott, Foresman and Co., Glenview, Ill.

Another excellent textbook which is considered to be a bit more advanced is Rudin, W., Principles of mathematical analysis (1976), New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co.

General Game Plan

This course is a rigorous introduction to analysis.

We will cover roughly chapters one through seven of our text. Topics covered will be metric spaces (including open and closed sets, convergence of sequences, compactness, connectedness, and completeness), functions of a real variable (including continuity, differentiation, integration, the intermediate value theorem, the mean value theorem, and the fundamental theorem of calculus) and series (including convergence tests, power series, and intervals of convergence.)

In all cases we will be concerned with rigorous statement and proof of all results. Learning to read and write clearly and rigorously will be a basic recurring theme of our work.

Prerequisite

A grade of C or better in MATH 027 or MATH 028 and also in one of MATH 033, MATH 034, or MATH 035; or permission of the instructor.

Class Meetings

Lectures MWF 9:30 in SCI 145

Actually, these may not always be lectures. We may do small group work, problem work, or other activities during some of these.

Discussion/Lab F 2:15-4:00 PM

Student participation in discussion sessions is considered in forming the grade for the course. These sessions will be discussions in groups or as a whole relating to problem solutions, writing and exposition, and other topics related to the course.
